WELCOME TO NAKAGAWA
ADULT DAY CARE, LLC
Our past often has a lot to do with who we become, what we like and don't like. For me it was being a lonely asthmatic child. Always last one chosen & left out by kids who could run faster. The tears and heartache taught me that we're all fragile and cruelty is not a necessity in life. The silver lining is that I got to spend a lot of time with adults, especially the kind and thoughtful elderly who could give me all the time and undivided attention I needed. They have always been my playmates, the ones I laugh and joke around with, the ones I confide in, the ones I share my baking and snacks with, my everyday coffee friends who in kindness have time to sit and talk story with me.

Socialization
We all have a deep need to connect with others and were not meant to go through life alone. Living with people who care about us is critical to our sense of worth, health and enjoyment in life. Who really wants to eat alone or go to a game or movie by themselves on a regular basis? Babies who lack physical touch literally stop growing and could die even with proper nutrition if prolonged. Many elderly develop major risk factors when left alone. Heart disease, high blood pressure, early onset dementia to name a few. Consequently, the elderly who live with those who actively engage with them tend to have less complications and thrive.
An AARP article dated 2/7/18 likens the damaging effects of isolation to smoking 15 cigarattes a day.

Being isolated at home alone while others go off to work; losing ability to drive; having a history of falls; forgetting to take medications, eat or hydrate can lead to more serious health problems.
Discovery
My newest family has just discovered their mother's hidden artistic abilities. I assumed she was naturally artistic until I heard her daughter's comments and surprised expression. One of the serendipities is I get to be a part of many surprising and happy moments like these. I never liked going through meaningless motions so around here we try to get to know each other and then explore and experiment with things that may be of interest to you so you find your unique purpose and fulfillment in your daily life.
This is not the end of the road, it's just another chapter you can build upon.
Because we're a small group in a residential setting, we have the flexibility to change our scheduling to best suit the needs of the group.
After our full day of group and personal activities you may want to read a book or magazine or find a comfortable spot to catnap. As always you have the freedom to make suggestions and work on any project. After all this is your home away from home.

A BIT ABOUT US
A Foundation of Love
Being a precocious 8 year old made it a no-brainer for my parents to send to me to Kauai each summer to cheer up my
lonely widowed Grandma. I'd entertain
her and her friends for hours on end
just dancing and singing my little lungs
out while they laughed and clapped their
hands saying "joozoo, joozoo, joozoo, "
which meant terriffic in Japanese.
(not that she was fluent but it was one of those most commonly used expressions back then).
My Grandma was an abandoned baby, left
on someones doorstep but we'll have to share that story another time.
There's times I wish I could pick up the phone and call her just to hear
her voice, then I remember she's gone. I should've asked her for her famous
buttery crusted manju recipe. She'd make dozens before flying out
to Honolulu.
Folks from Kauai would say they're coming to Honolulu and call us "Honolulu folks". I preferred cookies back then but how I wish I could have
some of her manju now so I'd know
she was still around.
I think I'll continue this in a blog as I
like to share stories.......
